sustainable renovation: kpfa radio station / industry: media

interior design, sustainable design

PROJECT: Redesign the national offices of Pacifica Radio and the station building at KPFA Radio in Berkeley, California.

REQUIREMENTS: Improve flow, ADA access, comfort and efficiency, add office space and utilize sustainable design principles whenever possible.

CHALLENGES: An employee who uses a wheelchair was not able to get upstairs to the offices.

APPROACH: Creative solution of the double-sided space-saving glass elevator. This dovetailed with the theme of transparency in media, for which I also added video monitors in the cafe, so that show recording could be visible to visitors, making what could be thought of as an outdated business seem more exciting.

RESULTS: The KPFA board of directors considered this project as one of over 100 submissions, and it got through to the final round of five before being eliminated.
